Separate collection, in addition to being a good habit to protect the environment, in Italy is a legal obligation sanctioned by the D.L. 22/1997 (Ronchi decree) In fact, the legislation currently in force provides that citizens, offices, companies, and all productive realities carry out separate collection at least for the following waste: organic material, paper, metal, plastic and glass.

For this reason, it is important to adopt the most effective strategies to properly divide waste into the appropriate containers.

In this way, in addition to reducing space and odours, the aesthetics will be respected both inside and outside homes and buildings and will avoid the penalties provided in the event of non-compliant delivery of waste.

Organize spaces in the kitchen

Most household waste is produced in the kitchen: food waste, food bags and containers, disposable plates and cutlery etc.

To properly separate this waste, polyethylene containers of different colours depending on the type of waste are usually used.

They can be purchased in the most common household goods shops, or are provided free of charge by the municipal authorities.

As they are rather bulky and inconspicuous, they usually find place on balconies and verandas.

For this, it is advisable to set up pre-collection points with smaller containers, placed in strategic points and hidden from view.

For example, in the larger kitchens, you can install a sliding kit for recycling under the sink or the top used for the preparation of dishes.

Otherwise, it will be sufficient to have vessels in the shape and size appropriate to the space available.

Separate collection in other rooms

The separation of waste produced in other rooms is usually easier.

In the living room, old newspapers, sheets used to take notes and more, can be stored in a larger and stronger paper bag, which is not always necessary to hide.

In fact, the paper used to trash does not dirty, does not produce a bad smell and can give the environment, especially if it is a study corner, a creative and industrious air.

Instead, in the bathroom, a small container at the foot of the sink will be used for the temporary collection of razors, q-tips and other toilet products to be given periodically in the main bin of the undifferentiated material.

Waste management in the office

In most cases, there is enough space in the offices to place the containers with more freedom.

Therefore, proper separate collection is primarily entrusted to the sense of responsibility of each employee.

For this reason, it is important to provide proper information on how to separate paper, plastic, packaging and other light materials and to make employees aware of the need to act carefully and implement certain measures.

For example, whenever possible, it is good practice to reduce the volume of packaging and to divide it into the various materials that make it up.

In addition, in the office as at home, clean and dirty paper, such as glue, solvents or other chemicals, should not be disposed of together and any staples and staples should be removed.

One of the crucial points for proper separate collection in the office is the common room for coffee break , or the increasingly popular dining area, even in smaller offices.

In these places it is essential to place a set of containers of different colors, corresponding to those of the bins used for the general collection.

Special, hazardous and bulky waste

Larger companies, in addition to a large amount of household type waste, often also produce so-called special waste.

The legislation for the proper management and disposal of this waste is quite strict and involves various administrative and practical requirements.

For example, hazardous waste often requires storage in dedicated areas that are not accessible to the public.

Moreover, electrical and electronic equipment and bulky waste must be delivered separately to the companies in charge of the withdrawal.

Therefore, depending on the waste materials produced, each company will implement the most appropriate solutions to optimize the spaces and carry out a separate collection according to the law.

In fact, any errors or voluntary non-compliances may result in administrative or criminal penalties, even serious ones.
